Batting average and batting WAR are related, but they do not measure the exact same thing. Batting average tells us how often a hitter gets a hit, while batting WAR captures a broader picture of how much a player contributes to run creation and overall team success. In general, players with higher batting averages often have stronger offensive production, but a player can still produce a high batting WAR by drawing walks, hitting for power, or creating runs in ways that do not always show up in a simple average.
ERA and pitching WAR are also related but not identical. ERA measures the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per seven innings, so it focuses on run prevention in a very direct way. Pitching WAR, by contrast, estimates the total number of wins a pitcher adds above a replacement-level pitcher across all aspects of performance, including how often they miss bats, limit baserunners, and help their team win games.
